Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple for their historical value. Step off the beaten path and head to Tenryuji Temple and Heian Shrine. And it doesn't end there: take in the spiritual surroundings of Sanjusangendo Temple, explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, and take a stroll through Gion.

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.
On the 23rd (Sun), take in the pleasant sights at Amano Yasugawara, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Amano Iwato Shrine, thencontemplate in the serene atmosphere at Takachiho Shrine, thentake in breathtaking views at Takachiho Gorge, and finally take in the dramatic scenery at Manai Falls. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 24th (Mon): make a trip to Shirakawa Springs and then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Kunimigaoka.

You can fly from Kyoto to Takachiho-cho in 6.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and taxi; or drive. In May, plan for daily highs up to °C, and evening lows to °C. On the 24th (Mon), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Iriomote-jima.

In May, Iriomote-jima is a bit warmer than Takachiho-cho - with highs of °C and lows of °C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 26th (Wed) early enough to ride a ferry to Ishigaki.

Miyakojima

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Escape the urban bustle at Yabiji and Sunayama Beach. Step off the beaten path and head to Aragusuku Beach and Toguchi no Hama. There's still lots to do: see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, take in the views from Irabu Ohashi, head off the coast to Irabu-jima Island, and visit a coastal fixture at Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse.
