Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Vatican Museums and Musei Capitolini will appeal to museum buffs. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Colosseum and St. Peter's Basilica. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Rome: Tivoli (Villa Adriana & Villa d'Este). The adventure continues: explore the ancient world of Pantheon, stroll the grounds of Catacombe di San Callisto, ponder the design of Trevi Fountain, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Church of St. Louis of the French.

Montreal, Canada to Rome is an approximately 12-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of train and flight. You'll lose 6 hours traveling from Montreal to Rome due to the time zone difference. Expect somewhat warmer temperatures when traveling from Montreal in May; daily highs in Rome reach 28°C and lows reach 17°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 31st (Sun) early enough to take a train to Florence.

Considered a cultural, artistic, and architectural jewel of Italy, Florence is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Duomo di Siena. Do some cultural sightseeing at Gallerie Degli Uffizi and Piazzale Michelangelo. Step out of Florence to go to Pisa and see Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is approximately 1h 10 min away. There's lots more to do: examine the collection at Academy Of Florence Art Gallery, appreciate the extensive heritage of Piazza del Duomo, take in panoramic vistas at Campanile di Giotto, and take in the spiritual surroundings of The Baptistery of St. John.

Getting from Rome to Florence by train takes about 2 hours. Other options: drive; or fly. Traveling from Rome in May, plan for slightly colder nights in Florence, with lows around 13°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Wed) to allow time to take a train to Venice.

Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Kick off your visit on the 4th (Thu): see the interesting displays at Doge's Palace, take in the views from Ponte dei Sospiri, admire the striking features of Basilica di San Marco, then contemplate the long history of Peggy Guggenheim Collection, then admire the striking features of Scala Contarini del Bovolo, and finally appreciate the extensive heritage of Piazza San Marco. Keep things going the next day: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Basilica di Sant’Antonio, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Scrovegni Chapel, then explore the activities along Canal Grande, and finally snap pictures at Ponte di Rialto.

Traveling by train from Florence to Venice takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In June, daily temperatures in Venice can reach 32°C, while at night they dip to 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Fri) to allow enough time to take a train to Milan.

In many ways the most modern of Italian cities, Milan is a busy, elegant metropolis with an impressive list of grand palaces, fine churches, and important museums.
Appreciate the collections at Museo Egizio and Pinacoteca di Brera. Duomo di Milano and Castello Sforzesco are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step out of Milan with an excursion to Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin--about 1h 35 min away. And it doesn't end there: explore the world behind art at Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, make a trip to Piazza del Duomo, and stroll the grounds of Monumental Cemetery.

Get some historical perspective at Santa Margherita di Antiochia Church and Cattedrale di San Lorenzo - Duomo di Genova. Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Cinque Terre Trails and Oratorio della Cofradia dei Bianchi o de Santa Croce. Get out of town with these interesting Cinque Terre side-trips: Portovenere (in Porto Venere) and Genoa (Galata Museo del Mare, Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, & more). There's still lots to do: trek along Footpath Monterosso - Vernazza, take a stroll around Vernazza, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Chiesa di Santo Stefano.
