The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Yoshinogari Historical Park and Hakozaki Shrine. Get a sense of the local culture at Dazaifu Tenman-gu and Kego Shrine. Change things up with these side-trips from Fukuoka: Karatsu (Hado Misaki & Nanatsugama Caves) and Tosu Premium Outlets (in Tosu). There's more to do: let the kids burn off some steam at Ohori Park and wander the streets of Nishijin Shopping District.

The mountain town of Takachiho-cho remains a place of great importance to Japan's spiritual and natural heritage, and the point where these two things intersect.
Takachiho Gorge has been added to your itinerary. Kick off your visit on the 26th (Mon): take in the dramatic natural features at Tokubetsuto Rice Terraces, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kaguraden, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kushifuru Shrine, and finally explore the stunning scenery at Takachiho Gorge. The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Shimogamo Jinja will appeal to history buffs. Take a break from Kyoto with a short trip to Mitsui Outlet Park Shiga Ryuo in Ryuo-cho, about 58 minutes away. There's much more to do: steep yourself in history at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, browse the different shops at Kyoto Station Building, wander the streets of Gion, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Sanjusangendo Temple.

Kyoto is very close to Osaka. In March, daytime highs in Kyoto are 57°F, while nighttime lows are 40°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Sun) to allow enough time to take a train to Tokyo.

Traveling by train from Kyoto to Tokyo takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. Expect a daytime high around 58°F in March, and nighttime lows around 43°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 9th (Fri) to allow time for travel back home.
