The capital of the island of Funen, Odense represents the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, who penned such classics as "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling." Denmark's third-largest city proudly displays its link to the famous writer with museums, sculptures, and public art installations dedicated to Andersen and his stories.
Kick off your visit on the 13th (Sat): browse the exhibits of The Danish Railway Museum, then examine the collection at H. C. Andersens House, then admire nature's wide array of creatures at Odense ZOO, and finally step into the grandiose world of Egeskov Castle. Keep things going the next day: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Sct. Albani Church, get outside with H. C.
