Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Venture out of the city with trips to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary (in Brighton) and Shene Distillery (in Pontville). There's still lots to do: take in the awesome beauty at Mount Wellington, indulge your thirst for a good beer at Cascade Brewery, shop like a local with Salamanca Market, and admire the masterpieces at Museum of Old and New Art (Mona).

Sydney to Hobart is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train, ferry, and bus; or do a combination of bus and ferry. Prepare for slightly colder weather when traveling from Sydney in July: high temperatures in Hobart hover around 15°C and lows are around 4°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 6th (Mon) so you can go by car to Port Arthur.

Change things up with a short trip to Waterfall Bay in Eaglehawk Neck (about 32 minutes away). Overlooking one of Tasmania's most scenic strips of coastline and serving as the gateway to Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to just 500 permanent residents.
Explore Coles Bay's surroundings by going to East Coast Natureworld (in Bicheno), Spring Vale Wines (in Cranbrook) and Melshell Oyster Shack (in Dolphin Sands). Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Dedicate the 16th (Thu) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. There's still lots to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Cataract Gorge Reserve, see the interesting displays at National Automobile Museum of Tasmania, steep yourself in history at Woolmers Estate, and walk around City Park.
