Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Step off the beaten path and head to Ueno District and Samukawa Shrine. Katori Jingu Shrine and Nezu Shrine are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Explore Tokyo's surroundings by going to Pola Museum of Art (in Hakone-machi), Kinomiya Shrine (in Atami) and Kashima Jingu (in Kashima). And it doesn't end there: take in the spiritual surroundings of Senso-ji Temple, wander the streets of Nihonbashi Bridge, explore the world behind art at Tokyo National Museum The Heiseikan, and contemplate the long history of Hie Jinjya.

Singapore, Singapore to Tokyo is an approximately 11-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry. The time zone difference when traveling from Singapore to Tokyo is 1 hour. Traveling from Singapore in December, things will get cooler in Tokyo: highs are around 14°C and lows about 4°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 24th (Tue) to allow time to drive to Takayama.

Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
On the 25th (Wed), sample the tasty concoctions at Watanabe Sake Brewery, contemplate the long history of Kanda house, get a new perspective on nature at Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village (Hida no Sato), then sample the tasty concoctions at Harada Sake Brewery, and finally see the interesting displays at Takayama Showa Museum. Keep things going the next day: examine the collection at Hikaru Museum, see the interesting displays at Lion Dance Ceremony Exhibition Hall (Shishi-Kaikan), then pick up some new knowledge with Daiou-ji Temple, and finally wander the streets of Sanmachi Suji.

You can drive from Tokyo to Takayama in 4.5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Tokyo in December, you will find days in Takayama are a bit cooler (9°C), and nights are about the same (3°C). Finish up your sightseeing early on the 26th (Thu) so you can go by car to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Ise Shrine Geku will appeal to history buffs. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Jojakkoji Temple and Oharai-machi. Take a break from Kyoto with a short trip to Sarutahiko Shrine in Ise, about 2h 15 min away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kennin-ji Temple, get to know the fascinating history of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, and explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle.

You can drive from Takayama to Kyoto in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. While traveling from Takayama, expect somewhat warmer days and about the same nights in Kyoto, ranging from highs of 13°C to lows of 4°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 31st (Tue) early enough to go by car to Osaka.
