Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get outdoors at Nara Park and Mt. Koya. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Himeji Castle (in Himeji), Nara (Nigatsu-do Temple & Todai-ji Temple) and Osaka (Osaka Castle, Dotonbori, & more). Next up on the itinerary: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, appreciate the extensive heritage of Katsura Imperial Villa, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Ise Grand Shrine.
