Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Hakone-machi: Arakura Fuji Sengen Jinja (in Fujiyoshida) and Lake Kawaguchi (in Fujikawaguchiko-machi). There's still lots to do: admire the masterpieces at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, take in the pleasant sights at Hakone Stone‐paved Road, contemplate the long history of Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, and take an in-depth tour of Hakone Sekisho and Hakone Sekisho Museum.

Take a train from Tokyo to Hakone-machi in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Tokyo in January, you will find days in Hakone-machi are little chillier (5°C), and nights are about the same (3°C). Cap off your sightseeing on the 26th (Sun) early enough to travel to Kyoto.

You can take a train from Hakone-machi to Kyoto in 4 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of flight and train. When traveling from Hakone-machi in January, plan for somewhat warmer days in Kyoto, with highs around 10°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 1°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 30th (Thu) so you can catch the train to Nara.

The country's first established capital, Nara houses some of the most storied buildings and natural attractions in Japan, with eight World Heritage Sites in total.
Start off your visit on the 30th (Thu): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kasuga Grand Shrine, take in the spiritual surroundings of Nigatsu-do Temple, walk around Nara Park, steep yourself in history at Taikichi Irie Historic Residence Site, then appreciate the history behind Todai-ji Temple, and finally see the interesting displays at Todaiji Temple Cultural Center. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kofuku-ji Temple, then take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Wakakusa, then browse the collection at Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library, and finally steep yourself in history at Byodoin.

Getting from Kyoto to Nara by train takes about an hour. Other options: drive; or do a combination of subway and train. January in Nara sees daily highs of 9°C and lows of 3°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Sat) so you can take a train to Osaka.
