You can drive from Tokyo to Nikko in 2 hours. Other options are to take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Tokyo in December, expect nights in Nikko to be a bit warmer, around 45°F, while days are slightly colder, around 49°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 28th (Sat) early enough to catch the train to Kyoto.
