Tourism in Shari-cho, a small town situated on Hokkaido's eastern tip, flourishes mainly because of its immediate proximity to the Shiretoko World Heritage Site.
Start off your visit on the 22nd (Thu): get outside with Road to Heaven, then admire the masterpieces at Kita no Alp Art Museum, then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Shari, and finally head outdoors with Ippon no Michi. Here are some ideas for day two: make a trip to Shiretoko Misaki, then explore the wealth of natural beauty at Shiretoko Nature Center, and then explore the activities along Shiretoko Beach.

A coastal town with a smattering of things to do, Abashiri has an interesting history and arresting natural scenery.
On the 24th (Sat), look for all kinds of wild species at Ubaranai Sango-so Colony, take in the dramatic natural features at Cape Notoro, stop by Ryuhyo Glass Museum, see the interesting displays at Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum, then get great views at Abashiri Coast, and finally examine the collection at Higashimokoto Nyurakukan.

You can drive from Shari-cho to Abashiri in 1.5 hours. Another option is to do a combination of taxi and train. In August in Abashiri, expect temperatures between 28°C during the day and 21°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 24th (Sat) to allow time to drive to Furano.

Situated in the center of the island, Furano has become known for its idyllic rural landscape, and the drastic changes it experiences as seasons shift.
Get some historical perspective at Asahidake Natural Hiking Route and Biei Shrine. Discover out-of-the-way places like Campana Rokkatei and Garden of Wind. Venture out of the city with trips to Shimukappu-mura (Hoshino Resort Tomamu Ski Area & Mina-Mina Beach) and Arte Piazza Bibai (in Bibai).
