The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Scuba & Snorkeling and Barrio Getsemani are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas and Walled City of Cartagena will appeal to history buffs. Take a break from Cartagena with a short trip to Aviario Nacional de Colombia in Isla Baru, about 50 minutes away. There's lots more to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Iglesia de la Trinidad, make a trip to Plaza de San Diego, and go for a walk through Plazoleta de Blas de Lezo.
