Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Attractions like Universal Studios Japan and Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan make great kid-friendly stops. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Nara Park (in Nara), Mt. Koya (in Koya-cho) and Himeji Castle (in Himeji). There's lots more to do: explore the historical opulence of Osaka Castle, stop by Shimada Shoten, take a stroll through Dotonbori, and see the interesting displays at Osaka Shiritsu Toyo Toji Museum.

Getting from Nagoya to Osaka by train takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: drive. When traveling from Nagoya in November, plan for somewhat warmer days in Osaka, with highs around 20°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 10°C. The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Bring the kids along to Monkey Park Iwatayama and Toei Kyoto Studio Park. Take a break from Kyoto with a short trip to Todai-ji Temple in Nara, about 1 hour away. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, and take a stroll through Gion.

Kyoto is very close to Osaka. In November, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 19°C, while at night they dip to 10°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 23rd (Sat) so you can take a train to Fuji.
