The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Popular historic sites such as Nijo Castle and Ryoanji Temple are in your itinerary. Get some cultural insight at Gion and Kinkaku-ji. Step out of Kyoto to go to Otsu and see Jishu Shrine, which is approximately 58 minutes away. There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, take in the spiritual surroundings of Tenryuji Temple, get to know the fascinating history of Katsura Imperial Villa, and go for a walk through Philosopher's Walk.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Other options are to fly; or drive. In April in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 22°C during the day and 11°C at night. On the 1st (Wed), you'll have the morning to explore before heading off to Hiroshima.
