The port city of Otaru has long attracted domestic visitors, drawn in by the city's many historic buildings, and has started to garner international attention, too.

You can drive from Asahikawa to Otaru in 2.5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or take a bus. In August, daily temperatures in Otaru can reach 27°C, while at night they dip to 25°C. You'll have a few hours on the 23rd (Fri) to wrap things up before traveling to Noboribetsu.

Perhaps the island's best-known hot spring resort, Noboribetsu has a long history of tourism.

Traveling from Otaru in August, plan for little chillier nights in Noboribetsu, with lows around 22°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Sat) so you can take a train to Hakodate.

A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.

For shopping fun, head to Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse or Hakodate Morning Market. Explore hidden gems such as Motomachi and Hotokegaura. Go for a jaunt from Hakodate to Hokuto to see Trappist Monasteries about 42 minutes away. You can take a train from Noboribetsu to Hakodate in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. In August, plan for daily highs up to 28°C, and evening lows to 23°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 27th (Tue) so you can travel to Sapporo.

A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.

Let the collections at The Hokkaido University Museum and Sapporo Art Museum capture your imagination. Get outdoors at Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort and Mt. Teine.
