The capital of French Polynesia, Pape'ete amounts to little more than a medium-sized town by Western standards, but it is still a thriving hub of culture and commerce.
Step out of Papeete to go to Punaauia and see Ciao Tahiti Excursions 4x4 - Day Tours, which is approximately 30 minutes away. There's much more to do: take in the natural beauty of Arahoho Blowhole, get engrossed in the history at Museum of Tahiti and the Islands, admire the natural beauty at Paofai Gardens, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Notre Dame Cathedral.

You can drive from Taravao to Papeete in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In December in Papeete, expect temperatures between 87°F during the day and 76°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Tue) early enough to fly back home.
