Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Shop till you drop at Mercado Manuel Firmino and Palacio da Bolsa. Step off the beaten path and head to Paco dos Duques de Braganca and Guimaraes Castle. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Porto: Centro Historico de Guimaraes (in Guimaraes), Bom Jesus do Monte (in Braga) and Santuario de Santa Luzia (in Viana do Castelo). The adventure continues: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra), enjoy the scholastic atmosphere at University of Coimbra, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco.

Toronto, Canada to Porto is an approximately 10-hour flight. You can also do a combination of ferry and flight; or do a combination of flight and train. You'll lose 5 hours traveling from Toronto to Porto due to the time zone difference. Expect much warmer weather when traveling from Toronto in March: highs in Porto hover around 18°C, while lows dip to 9°C. Start off your visit on the 25th (Wed): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Convent of Christ, steep yourself in history at Batalha Monastery, then get into the urban bustle at Mercado de Sant'Ana, and finally make a trip to Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rosario de Fatima.
