Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Piazza San Marco and Doge's Palace are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Scrovegni Chapel and San Giorgio Maggiore. Change things up with a short trip to Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua (about 48 minutes away). There's much more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Scuola Grande di San Rocco, stop by Magie di Carnevale, admire the landmark architecture of Basilica di San Marco, and take a stroll through Cannaregio.
