The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Ninna-ji Temple. Get a sense of the local culture at Kinkaku-ji and Kennin-ji Temple. When in Kyoto, make a side trip to see Miho Museum in Koka, approximately 52 minutes away. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, see the interesting displays at Kyoto Railway Museum, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanzen-in Temple, and make a trip to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

You can take a train from Nagoya to Kyoto in an hour. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Nagoya in May, you will find days in Kyoto are somewhat warmer (29°C), and nights are about the same (17°C). Wrap up your sightseeing on the 25th (Mon) to allow time to take a train to Osaka.
