The capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, boasts an impressive medieval quarter--one of the continent's largest and a World Heritage Site with almost 2,000 historical buildings.
Family-friendly places like Gediminas Castle Tower and Walking tours will thrill your kids. Get out of town with these interesting Vilnius side-trips: Trakai (Kenesa & Trakai Island Castle Museum). Situated between the Neris and Nemunas rivers, Kaunas is known for its old town, which, though smaller than the capital's, is in much better condition.
Kids will enjoy Ninth Fort and National M. K. Ciurlionis Art Museum. Change things up with these side-trips from Kaunas: Alytus (Alytaus Miesto Parkas & White Rose Bridge), The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua (in Birstonas) and Grutas Park (in Druskininkai). There's still lots to do: step into the grandiose world of Kaunas Castle, contemplate the long history of Kaunas Town Hall, take in nature's colorful creations at Kaunas Botanical Garden, and wander the streets of Laisves aleja (Liberty Boulevard).
