In August, Tokyo is a bit warmer than San Francisco - with highs of 88°F and lows of 76°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 4th (Sun) so you can go by car to Shimoda.

On a trip to Shimoda, a small town nestled on the tip of the Izu peninsula, you can take advantage of the scenic sandy beaches and soak in the laid-back atmosphere.
Visit Otago Beach and Inatori Ukiuki Beach for some beach relaxation. Visiting Ita Beach and Toi Beach will get you outdoors. When in Shimoda, make a side trip to see Odoi Beach in Izu, approximately 1h 05 min away. There's lots more to do: kick back and relax at Tatadohama Beach, stroll through Kisami Ohama Beach, and examine the collection at Izu Naranda no Sato Kawazu Heian Buddha Statue Pavilion.

You can drive from Tokyo to Shimoda in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train. In August, plan for daily highs up to 84°F, and evening lows to 79°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Wed) early enough to take a train to Kyoto.

Get some cultural insight at Gion and Nijo Castle. Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Osaka Castle will appeal to history buffs. Change things up with a short trip to Dotonbori in Osaka (about 1h 10 min away). And it doesn't end there: contemplate the long history of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Eikando Zenrinji Temple, and take an in-depth tour of Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan.

You can take a train from Shimoda to Kyoto in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and flight. Expect somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Shimoda in August: highs in Kyoto hover around 92°F, while lows dip to 77°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Sat) early enough to take a train to Hiroshima.
