The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get a sense of the local culture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Explore hidden gems such as Shimogamo Jinja and Kamigamo Shrine. There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at Daikaku-ji, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Nishi Honganji, get great views at Sagano, and don't miss a visit to Sannenzaka Ninenzaka.

Located on the coast in the middle of the island, Onna-son has become known for its beaches and seaside economy.
