The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Start off your visit on the 23rd (Sun): don't miss a visit to Sannenzaka Ninenzaka, then steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. On your second day here, steep yourself in history at Ninna-ji Temple, take in the local highlights with Walking tours, and then wander the streets of Pontocho.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. In December in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 13°C during the day and 4°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 24th (Mon) so you can take a train to Hatsukaichi.

The city of Hatsukaichi developed from a small market town, frequented by passing samurais during the Edo period.
Kick off your visit on the 25th (Tue): steep yourself in history at Itsukushima Shrine and then enjoy breathtaking views from Shishiiwa Tenbodai. On your second day here, kick back and relax at Mikasahama Beach, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Itsukushima Shrine Torii, then stroll through Miyajima, and finally take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Getting from Kyoto to Hatsukaichi by train takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: drive. Expect a daytime high around 13°C in December, and nighttime lows around 4°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 26th (Wed) so you can travel to Nakijin-son.

Getting from Hatsukaichi to Nakijin-son by combination of train, flight, bus, and taxi takes about 7.5 hours. Other options: do a combination of train, ferry, and taxi; or do a combination of car and ferry. Prepare for somewhat warmer weather when traveling from Hatsukaichi in December: high temperatures in Nakijin-son hover around 24°C and lows are around 15°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 27th (Thu) so you can travel to Ishigaki.
