The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Kick off your visit on the 5th (Tue): steep yourself in history at Heian Shrine, steep yourself in history at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, and then steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. On the next day, take a stroll through Gion, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, and finally steep yourself in history at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.

Take a train from Izu to Kyoto in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and flight. Traveling from Izu in May, expect nights in Kyoto to be slightly colder, around 17°C, while days are a bit warmer, around 29°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 7th (Thu) so you can catch the train to Nara.
