Built on a desolate swamp as a showcase capital of Imperial Russia, this grand city has certainly lived up to the expectations of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great.
For shopping fun, head to Nevsky Prospekt or Tretyakov's Gallery. Savior on the Spilled Blood and The Great Mosque of St. Petersburg will appeal to history buffs. And it doesn't end there: examine the collection at Saint Isaac's Cathedral, pause for some serene contemplation at Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas, steep yourself in history at Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad), and admire the masterpieces at The State Hermitage Museum.
