Divided into neighborhoods with distinct characters and cultural heritages, San Diego sits just north of the Mexican border and offers visitors a blend of tourist attractions, including a lively nightlife, diverse cuisine, and a thriving musical scene.
You'll get in some beach time at Coronado Beach and Windansea Beach. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Coronado Island and South Carlsbad State Beach. Explore San Diego's surroundings by going to Moonlight State Beach (in Encinitas) and Del Mar City Beach (in Del Mar). There's still lots to do: stroll through Pacific Beach, admire the majestic nature at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, enjoy the sand and surf at La Jolla Cove, and get some thrills out on the water with a waterskiing or jet-skiing adventure.

Portland to San Diego is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Portland in August, plan for little chillier days in San Diego, with highs around 78°F, while nights are somewhat warmer with lows around 68°F.
