Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.Visit Senso-ji Temple and Tokyo National Museum for their historical value. Get a sense of the local culture at Odaiba and Edo-Tokyo Museum. Step out of Tokyo with an excursion to Tokyo DisneySea in Maihama--about 30 minutes away. There's lots more to do: get great views at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, get in on the family fun at Tokyo Disneyland, get curious at National Museum of Nature and Science, and ponder the world of politics at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings.

Boston, USA to Tokyo is an approximately 17.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of ferry and flight. Traveling from Boston to Tokyo, you'll lose 14 hours due to the time zone difference. Getting from Tokyo to Miyakojima by flight takes about 4.5 hours. In May, Miyakojima is somewhat warmer than Tokyo - with highs of 82°F and lows of 74°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 23rd (Sat) so you can travel to Hiroshima.

Traveling by combination of flight and train from Miyakojima to Hiroshima takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly. Plan for a bit cooler temperatures traveling from Miyakojima in May, with highs in Hiroshima at 75°F and lows at 60°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 25th (Mon) early enough to catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.Get some historical perspective at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji. Get some cultural insight at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Gion. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Himeji Castle (in Himeji), Nara (Todaiji Temple Cultural Center, Nara Park, & more) and Osaka (Universal Studios Japan & Dotonbori). Traveling by train from Hiroshima to Kyoto takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In May, plan for daily highs up to 77°F, and evening lows to 59°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 30th (Sat) early enough to travel back home.
