Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Step out of the city life by going to Mt. Takao and Oyama Rice Terraces. Get some historical perspective at Asakusa Shrine and Hokokuji Temple (Takedera Temple). Explore Tokyo's surroundings by going to Oya Stone Museum (in Utsunomiya) and Kamakura (Meigetsuin (Hydrangea Temple) & Kencho-ji Temple). The adventure continues: take a stroll through Yanaka, make a trip to Shibuya Crossing, contemplate the long history of Nezu Shrine, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Sensō-ji.

Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Mon): admire the masterpieces at The Hakone Open-Air Museum and then trek along Hakone Stone‐paved Road. Here are some ideas for day two: explore the world behind art at Okada Museum of Art, admire the masterpieces at Hakone Museum of Art, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Choanji Temple, then see the interesting displays at Lalique Museum Hakone, and finally take in nature's colorful creations at Little Prince Museum.

Traveling by train from Tokyo to Hakone-machi takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Tokyo in September, you will find days in Hakone-machi are slightly colder (24°C), and nights are about the same (22°C). On the 4th (Wed), you'll have the morning to explore before heading off to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Nanzen-ji Temple and Toji. Get some historical perspective at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Kyoto: Dotonbori (in Osaka) and Nara (Nara Park, Nigatsu-do Temple, & more). You can take a train from Hakone-machi to Kyoto in 4 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of flight and train. Traveling from Hakone-machi in September, expect nights in Kyoto to be about the same, around 23°C, while days are somewhat warmer, around 33°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Sat) to allow enough time to take a train to Hiroshima.
