The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Nijo Castle and Sanzen-in Temple. Step off the beaten path and head to Ninna-ji Temple and Shimogamo Jinja. There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kennin-ji Temple, steep yourself in history at Genkoan, take some stellar pictures from Mt. Kurama, and appreciate the extensive heritage of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple.

You can take a train from Hiroshima to Kyoto in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In October, plan for daily highs up to 74°F, and evening lows to 60°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 22nd (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Takayama.
