The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Tofuku-ji Temple and Kodai-ji Temple. There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple, don't miss a visit to Gion, and step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. April in Kyoto sees daily highs of 22°C and lows of 11°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Thu) to allow enough time to take a train to Hatsukaichi.

Getting from Hatsukaichi to Miyakojima by combination of train, flight, and taxi takes about 5 hours. Traveling from Hatsukaichi in April, things will get a bit warmer in Miyakojima: highs are around 29°C and lows about 23°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Sun) early enough to catch the ferry to Iriomote-jima.
