The port city of Otaru has long attracted domestic visitors, drawn in by the city's many historic buildings, and has started to garner international attention, too.
On the 11th (Wed), browse the eclectic array of goods at Sankaku Market, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt.Tengu, contemplate the long history of The Site of Temiya Line, take in the views from Asakusa Bridge, then tour the pleasant surroundings at Otaru Canal, and finally contemplate the long history of Former Hayakawa Branch Store.

Chitose to Otaru is an approximately 1.5-hour train ride. You can also drive; or do a combination of train and bus. Traveling from Chitose in December, Otaru is somewhat warmer at night with lows of -2°C. You will have some time to spend on the 12th (Thu) before leaving for Kutchan-cho.
