The main tourist town in the Bay of Islands area, Paihia gives visitors a good range of accommodations, a convenient town center, long sandy beaches, and interesting architecture.
Your cultural itinerary includes sights like Waitangi Treaty Grounds and Pompallier Mission and Printery. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Paihia Harbour and Dolphin & Whale Watching. Step out of Paihia to go to Opononi and see Tane Mahuta Walk, which is approximately 1h 30 min away. Surrounded by lakes and featuring impressive areas of geothermal landscape, the city of Rotorua offers an otherwordly landscape and a welcoming, peaceful environment, with the culture of the native Maori people very much in the foreground.
Step off the beaten path and head to Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Mount Maunganui Base Track. Get outdoors at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and Huka Falls Walkway. Take a break from Rotorua with a short trip to Mt Maunganui Main Beach in Mount Maunganui, about 1h 10 min away. There's much more to do: relax and float downstream with a rafting and tubing tour, trek along Okere Falls Track, tour the pleasant surroundings at Tikitapu Nature Walk, and take in the natural beauty of Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave.

You can do a combination of taxi and flight from Paihia to Rotorua in 4.5 hours. Other options are to fly; or drive. In March, plan for daily highs up to 26°C, and evening lows to 18°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 15th (Sun) early enough to drive to Napier.

Wanaka

Situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka in the Otago region, Wanaka has become a popular ski and summer resort area, owing to its extensive views of the lake and its proximity to some of the best slopes in the country.
On the 17th (Tue), trek along Roys Peak Track. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: hike along Blue Pools Track, trek along Mount Iron Track, then learn about winemaking at Rippon Vineyard, and finally fly down the slopes at Wanaka.

You can fly from Napier to Wanaka in 6.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of bus and flight; or do a combination of bus, taxi, and flight. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 18th (Wed) so you can catcht the bus to Queenstown.
