Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Popular historic sites such as Tokyo National Museum and Imperial Palace are in your itinerary. Senso-ji Temple and Samurai Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Have a day of magic on the 4th (Fri) at Tokyo Disneyland. Melbourne, Australia to Tokyo is an approximately 14.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight. The time zone changes from Australian Eastern Standard Time (Victoria) (AEST) to Japan Standard Time (JST), which is usually a -1 hour difference. Traveling from Melbourne in October, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit warmer in Tokyo, with lows of 18°C. Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
On the 6th (Sun), contemplate the long history of Kiunkaku, then hike along Hakone Stone‐paved Road, then contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu.

Drive from Tokyo to Hakone-machi in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. When traveling from Tokyo in October, plan for little chillier days and about the same nights in Hakone-machi: temperatures range from 19°C by day to 17°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 7th (Mon) to allow enough time to travel to Kyoto.

Take a train from Hakone-machi to Kyoto in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of flight and train. Expect a bit warmer weather when traveling from Hakone-machi in October: highs in Kyoto hover around 27°C, while lows dip to 18°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Thu) so you can take a train to Hiroshima.
