The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Kids will enjoy Huis Ten Bosch and Agiruno Oka. Step out of Nagasaki with an excursion to Nagasaki Bio Park in Saikai--about 58 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: get engrossed in the history at Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, snap pictures at Megane Bridge, take in nature's colorful creations at Glover Garden, and examine the collection at Dejima.

Kick off your visit on the 27th (Fri): meet the residents at Oita Marine Palace Aquarium Umitamago, learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Takasakiyama Nature Zoo, contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Kinrin, then soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens, and finally take in the natural beauty of Hells of Beppu. Keep things going the next day: take in the natural beauty of Umi Jigoku, get to know the resident critters at African Safari, relax in the rural setting at Senzai Farm, then contemplate the long history of Usajingu Shrine, and finally take some stellar pictures from Tashibu no Sato Sannomiya no Kei.

Traveling by car from Nagasaki to Beppu takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. In March, daytime highs in Beppu are 15°C, while nighttime lows are 7°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Sat) to allow time to drive to Fukuoka.

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Start off your visit on the 29th (Sun): let little ones run wild at Ohori Park, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Dazaifu Tenman-gu, then enjoy breathtaking views from Komenoyama Obsevatory, then admire the landmark architecture of Hakata Station, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine. On the 30th (Mon), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: admire the natural beauty at Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, meet the residents at Marine World umino-nakamichi, then take in panoramic vistas at Fukuoka Tower, then admire the masterpieces at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, and finally buy something for everyone on your list at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center.

Getting from Beppu to Fukuoka by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: take a train; or take a bus. March in Fukuoka sees daily highs of 17°C and lows of 7°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 30th (Mon) so you can catch the train to Kumamoto.
