The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Nijo Castle and Kinkaku-ji. Step off the beaten path and head to Tenryuji Temple and Tofuku-ji Temple. There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, wander the streets of Gion, don't miss a visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and steep yourself in history at Sanjusangendo Temple.
