The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Nijo-jo Castle and Dotonbori are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step off the beaten path and head to Tofuku-ji Temple and Toji. There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, take a stroll through Gion, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, and take some stellar pictures from Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Orlando, USA to Kyoto is an approximately 21.5-hour combination of flight and train. You can also do a combination of bus, flight, and train.
