The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get some historical perspective at Tenryuji Temple and Tofuku-ji Temple. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Nanzen-ji Temple and Toji. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Hikone Castle (in Hikone) and Byodoin (in Uji). And it doesn't end there: steep yourself in history at Ninna-ji Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kodai-ji Temple, and make a trip to Eikando Zenrinji Temple.

Toronto, Canada to Kyoto is an approximately 18.5-hour combination of flight and train. You can also fly; or do a combination of flight and bus. The time zone difference moving from Eastern Standard Time to Japan Standard Time is 14 hours. Prepare for a bit warmer weather when traveling from Toronto in October: high temperatures in Kyoto hover around 27°C and lows are around 18°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 14th (Mon) early enough to catch the train to Hiroshima.

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.

Naha, the capital of Okinawa, has deep roots: Stone Age relics have been found in the city, and through the Middle Ages it rose in importance in the Ryukyu Kingdom.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Scuba & Snorkeling and Sefa-Utaki. Okinawa Peace Memorial Park and Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get out of town with these interesting Naha side-trips: AEONMALL OKINAWA RYCOM (in Kitanakagusuku-son), Katsuren Castle Ruins (in Uruma) and Onna Station Nakayukui Market (in Onna-son).

Traveling by flight from Fukuoka to Naha takes 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and ferry; or do a combination of car and ferry. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Fukuoka in October, with highs in Naha at 33°C and lows at 28°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 19th (Sat) to allow time to travel to Tokyo.
