Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Museum-lovers will appreciate Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre and National Automobile Museum of Tasmania. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary and Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery. Get out of town with these interesting Launceston side-trips: Beauty Point (Seahorse World & Platypus House), House of Anvers Museum of Chocolate (in Latrobe) and Tasmazia & The Village of Lower Crackpot (in Promised Land). There's still lots to do: appreciate the views at The Tamar Valley, admire the sheer force of Lilydale Falls, and do a tasting at 3 Willows Vineyard.

Overlooking one of Tasmania's most scenic strips of coastline and serving as the gateway to Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to just 500 permanent residents.
Start off your visit on the 23rd (Sat): look for all kinds of wild species at East Coast Natureworld and then get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. Here are some ideas for day two: enjoy the sea views from Cape Tourville Lighthouse and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Friendly Beaches.
