The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple for their historical value. Attractions like Kinkaku-ji and Gion make great kid-friendly stops. Venture out of the city with trips to Nara (Kofuku-ji Temple, Todai-ji Temple, &more). Next up on the itinerary: steep yourself in history at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, make a trip to Nijo Castle, and shop like a local with Nishiki Market Shopping District.
