The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Eikando Zenrinji Temple and Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple. Popular historic sites such as Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji are in your itinerary. Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Todai-ji Temple (in Nara) and Dotonbori (in Osaka). The adventure continues: explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, and contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Saint Louis, USA to Kyoto is an approximately 20-hour combination of flight and train. You can also fly. Traveling from Saint Louis to Kyoto, you'll lose 15 hours due to the time zone difference. Plan for a bit warmer nights when traveling from Saint Louis in October since evenings lows in Kyoto dip to 60°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Sat) so you can take a train to Hiroshima.

Grapple with history and appreciate modernity in Hiroshima, a city known around the world for its tragic past and inspiring rebirth.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims and Shukkei-en Garden. Get a sense of the local culture at JMSDF Kure Museum and Itsukushima Shrine. Step out of Hiroshima to go to Hatsukaichi and see Itsukushima Shrine Torii, which is approximately 1h 10 min away. There's still lots to do: see the interesting displays at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, don't miss a visit to Peace Memorial Park - Hiroshima, explore the historical opulence of Hiroshima Castle, and contemplate the long history of Atomic Bomb Dome.

Take a train from Kyoto to Hiroshima in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In October, daytime highs in Hiroshima are 73°F, while nighttime lows are 61°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 13th (Tue) early enough to travel to Miyakojima.

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Kick off your visit on the 14th (Wed): tour the pleasant surroundings at Yonaha Maehama Beach, then take in the views from Irabu Ohashi, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Sunayama Beach. On the 15th (Thu), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: step off the mainland to explore Shimojiiima Island and then kick back and relax at Aragusuku Beach.

Traveling by combination of train and flight from Hiroshima to Miyakojima takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly. Traveling from Hiroshima in October, expect Miyakojima to be a bit warmer, temps between 83°F and 75°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 15th (Thu) so you can travel to Tokyo.
