The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Mon): get great views at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, steep yourself in history at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, then step into the grandiose world of Nijo-jo Castle, and finally snap pictures at Togetsukyo Bridge. Keep things going the next day: wander the streets of Gion, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, then admire the natural beauty at Shosei-en Garden, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Ryoanji Temple.

New York City, USA to Kyoto is an approximately 20.5-hour combination of flight and train. You can also do a combination of flight, taxi, and train. Traveling from New York City to Kyoto, you'll lose 14 hours due to the time zone difference. In July in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 89°F during the day and 76°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 3rd (Tue) to allow time to take a train to Himeji.

On the 4th (Wed), don't miss a visit to Shoshazan Engyoji, then take in nature's colorful creations at Kokoen Garden, and then step into the grandiose world of Himeji Castle.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Himeji in an hour. Another option is to drive. When traveling from Kyoto in July, plan for slightly colder days and about the same nights in Himeji: temperatures range from 83°F by day to 77°F at night. Take a train from Hiroshima to Nagasaki in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and bus; or drive. Expect a daytime high around 87°F in July, and nighttime lows around 77°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 6th (Fri) early enough to travel to Matsumoto.

A castle town, Matsumoto possesses one of the best-preserved feudal structures in the country, and maintains its historical attractions and traditions while simultaneously exuding a modern, cosmopolitan charm.
Start off your visit on the 7th (Sat): steep yourself in history at Yohashira Shrine, wander the streets of Nakamachi Street, then explore the historical opulence of Matsumoto Castle, and finally contemplate the long history of Kaichi Gakko Primary School.

Traveling by car from Hakone-machi to Tokyo takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. While traveling from Hakone-machi, expect somewhat warmer days and about the same nights in Tokyo, ranging from highs of 87°F to lows of 74°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Tue) to allow time to travel back home.
