A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.
Kick off your visit on the 22nd (Sun): browse the eclectic array of goods at Hakodate Morning Market, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Hakodate, take in panoramic vistas at Goryokaku Tower, then test the waters at a local thermal spa, and finally admire the landmark architecture of Goryokaku Park. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Yafurai Tenmangu, take in the spiritual surroundings of Trappist Monasteries, then appreciate the extensive heritage of Onuma Park Walking Path, then stop by Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, and finally wander the streets of Motomachi.

Start off your visit on the 25th (Wed): kick back and relax at Shiretoko Beach, get a dose of the wild on a nature and wildlife tour, then explore the striking landscape of Shiretoko Nature Center, then explore the activities along Shiretoko Goko Lake, and finally admire the sheer force of Kamuiwakka Hot Waterfall. Here are some ideas for day two: get outside with Shiretoko Highway, then look for all kinds of wild species at Shiretoko Peninsula, then make a trip to Shiretoko Pass, and finally don't miss a visit to Shiretoko Misaki.

A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Take a break from the city and head to Niseko Hanazono Resort and Oyunumagawa Natural Footbath. Get some cultural insight at Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura) and Former Hokkaido Government Office Building. Get out of town with these interesting Sapporo side-trips: Otaru Canal (in Otaru), Furano (Furano Ski Resort & Campana Rokkatei) and Shinsennuma (in Kyowa-cho). There's much more to do: fly down the slopes at Niseko Annupuri International Ski Area, take some stellar pictures from Sapporo TV Tower, pause for some photo ops at Lieutenant Lerch Statue, and stroll around Kokuei Takino Suzuran Hillside National Park.

Traveling by combination of taxi and flight from Shari-cho to Sapporo takes 4 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and flight. December in Sapporo sees daily highs of 0°C and lows of -2°C at night. On the 31st (Tue), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel back home.
