Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Get outdoors at Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary and Mole Creek Caves. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at The Tamar Valley and Marakoopa Cave. Change things up with these side-trips from Launceston: Platypus House (in Beauty Point), Twelve Acre Wood (in Claude Road) and Brickendon Colonial Farm Village (in Longford). It doesn't end there: take in the dramatic scenery at Lilydale Falls and explore the striking landscape at Alum Cliffs.

For maps, ratings, other places to visit, and tourist information, you can read our Launceston route planner.

Sydney to Launceston is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of train, ferry, and bus. Traveling from Sydney in January, expect Launceston to be a bit cooler, temps between 28°C and 12°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 5th (Sun) so you can drive to St Helens.
