Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Head to Dotonbori and Hankyu Umeda Hontenfor some retail therapy. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Horyu-ji Temple and Nigatsu-do Temple. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Kofuku-ji Temple (in Nara) and Koya-cho (Kongobu-ji Temple & Koyasan Danjo Garan). There's much more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Toshodai-ji Temple, appreciate the extensive heritage of Osaka, ponder the world of politics at Mint Museum, and walk around Kemasakuranomiya Park.
