Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
On the 3rd (Fri), tour the pleasant surroundings at Yonehara Beach, then get outside with Cape Hirakubozaki, then enjoy breathtaking views from Tamatorizaki Observatory, and finally find your balance on the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area. On the 4th (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: stop by Yurateiku Market, walk around Banna Park, appreciate the extensive heritage of Island Countryside Settlement, then take a leisurely stroll along Nishi Pier, and finally kick back and relax at Kondoi Beach.

Miyakojima

Miyakojima
A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Kick off your visit on the 5th (Sun): take in the views from Irabu Bridge, then tour the pleasant surroundings at Yonaha Maehama Beach, then tour the pleasant surroundings at Aragusuku Beach, and finally kick back and relax at Sunayama Beach. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 6th (Mon): discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour, then kick back and relax at Toguchi no Hama, and then head off the coast to Shimojiiima Island.

A spiritual center of Shintoism, Ise stands as a traditional city where visitors can see the roots of Japanese culture in a number of well-preserved natural and historic sites.
Start off your visit on the 7th (Tue): take in the spiritual surroundings of Sarutahiko Shrine, steep yourself in history at Oharai-machi, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Matsuo Kanonji Temple, look for gifts at Hakutaka Miyake Shoten, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Tsukiyominomiya, and finally get to know the fascinating history of Ise Shrine Geku.

You can do a combination of flight and train from Miyakojima to Ise in 5.5 hours. Traveling from Miyakojima in January, you will find days in Ise are colder (9°C), and nights are little chillier (7°C). Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Tue) so you can travel to Matsue.

Kick off your visit on the 8th (Wed): get your bearings at Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo, make a trip to Former Taisha Station, take in the spiritual surroundings of Yaegaki Shrine, then explore the galleries of Adachi Museum of Art, and finally look for gifts at Rihaku Shuzo. Traveling by combination of train, flight, and taxi from Ise to Matsue takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. Traveling from Ise in January, plan for slightly colder nights in Matsue, with lows around 1°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 9th (Thu) early enough to travel to Onna-son.

Located on the coast in the middle of the island, Onna-son has become known for its beaches and seaside economy.
On the 10th (Fri), steep yourself in history at Nakijin Castle Ruins, browse the fresh offerings at Aiai Farm, then look for gifts at Onna Station Nakayukui Market, and finally discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour. On the 11th (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: get to know the fascinating history of Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, then browse the different shops at AEONMALL OKINAWA RYCOM, and then steep yourself in history at Katsuren Castle Ruins.

Do a combination of taxi and flight from Matsue to Onna-son in 7.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of train and ferry. When traveling from Matsue in January, plan for warmer days and somewhat warmer nights in Onna-son: temperatures range from 22°C by day to 13°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 11th (Sat) to allow time to travel back home.
