The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get some historical perspective at Shoren-in Temple (Shoren-in Monzeki) and Toji. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Kennin-ji Temple and Nanzen-ji Temple. Next up on the itinerary: steep yourself in history at Ninna-ji Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Shimogamo Jinja, don't miss a visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle.

Manama, Bahrain to Kyoto is an approximately 15.5-hour combination of flight and train. You can also fly. The time zone changes from Arabia Standard Time to Japan Standard Time, which is usually a 6 hour difference. Prepare for a bit cooler weather when traveling from Manama in July: high temperatures in Kyoto hover around 37°C and lows are around 28°C. Split into two parts by the Kinokawa River, the city of Wakayama stands nestled in the eponymous plain, overlooked by a historic hilltop castle that was rebuilt after World War II.
Start off your visit on the 6th (Sat): explore the historical opulence of Wakayama Castle, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kimiidera Temple, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kimii-dera Shimbutsuden, then enjoy the sand and surf at Kataonami Beach, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kishu Toshogu Shrine.
