The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.

Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Hakozaki-gu and Yoshinogari Historical Park. Visiting Tsutsukihama Beach and Ohori Park will get you outdoors. Venture out of the city with trips to Ito Sai Sai (in Itoshima), Sasaguri-machi (Soshodaiji Temple, Tennoin Temple, & more) and Dazaifu (Kamado Shrine, Dazaifu Temmangu, & more).
