Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan, Chiang Mai

4.7
#1 of 39 in Historic Sites in Chiang Mai
Admire the traditional design and reverential atmosphere at Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan, a Buddhist temple located in Chiang Mai's historical center. King Saen Muang Ma initiated construction in the 14th century, intending to bury his father's ashes here. The project wasn't completed until the mid 15th century, and since then the temple has been rebuilt, refurbished, and redesigned on numerous occasions. Originally three separate temple areas, the sites were joined up to create the place of worship you see today, making it an area of impressive scale as well as architecture. Visit the grounds to discover its interesting and volatile history; look for the replica of the famous Emerald Buddha once housed here and the city pillar surrounded by three dipterocarp trees. We were staying a street away so visited in the late afternoon: sat & listened to the monks chanting before heading outside and getting some great pictures as the sun went down .  more »

Representatives of the old temple in Chiang Mai. One is to undermine the features have been compromised by the earthquake. By the time we got lots of young monks turned out the monks were an expression of that. I went with the old town and it's great to come.

The most famous temple in Chiang Mai, My hotel was near this temple, so I saw it numbers of time. It's really a majestic temple. Chiang Mai visit could not be completed without touring this temple. There are many temples within old city area.. you can say it's a city of temple.

Worth to stop by to this new and centuries old Buddhist temple in the back. It is just within walking distance from Chiang Mai city center. Very interesting that two dragons (the big snakes) guarding the temple gates....Do not know what is the meaning. But inside the new temple, you can see golden beautiful decors.. And Statues of Buddhist and monks...

Wat Chedi Luang is located just a short walk fron the City Center of CM. It is believed to be the old City shrine with a long and rich history. Go there if You want to know more about Buddhist life. At the 'Chat with Monk' Programm You will find a lot of friendly young novices who will be more than happy to practice their English with You.

the compound comprises a historical pyramid, a big temple and then few smaller buildings. Women are not allowed to go inside some of them though, which was a shame because I could peek some stunning murals. Nevertheless, what I saw was very inspiring. The big temple is gorgeously decorated! Very peaceful atmosphere.

Very beautiful temple (especially the fine art inside the building). There's also an ancient worship place which is also terrific.
