Trip Planner: Africa / Tanzania / Zanzibar Archipelago / Zanzibar Island / Zanzibar City / Stone Town / The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe)
Explore the high brown walls and various entrances of The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), a landmark building of the Old Town and a popular tourist destination. Featuring crenelated stone battlements with upright merlons, embrasures, and entrances with pointed arches, the fort with its inner courtyard has been converted into a cultural center dotted with curio shops. Built by the Omanis as a defense against the Portuguese in the 17th century, this remains the oldest standing structure in the Stone Town. Buy some tingatinga paintings and traditional handicrafts from the shops, or watch a performance in the fort's open-air amphitheater. It's a historical fort in the middle of stone town. Although it is little, it has some interesting history. There is no tours but you can walk around the inside and on top of some of the walls. Inside the fort are some shops that sell wood carvings and clothes. There is a place to eat inside as well. The best part is in one of the watchtowers there is an art school with paintings on the wall and students hard at work. It's a nice place for a short visit. But don't expect to see to much.
The Fort is one of the Oldest Structures in Zanzibar and dates back to the time when the Omani Arabs expelled the Portuguese. The Fort served as a depot during the construction of the 7 mile lone railway line to the village of Bububu. No remnants of the railway line appear to have survived. After about 09h00, shops and a gallery open in the courtyard and one of the towers.
