Oldupai Gorge, Ngorongoro Conservation Area

A key feature in the timeline of ancient human history, Oldupai Gorge has witnessed millions of years of evolution. Cutting into the Great Rift Valley of East Africa, the deep ravine is widely considered one of the world's most important sites of paleoanthropology and lies within a wider World Heritage Site. Since Mary and Louis Leakey first began excavating here in the mid-20th century, research programs have discovered some of the first used stone tools and traces of social and communal activity. Delve into your ancient ancestral routes, touring the onsite gorge museum and taking a guided walk around this world-famous portion of Serengeti landscape. • Little known and frequented, this gorge, which, in reality, is a kind of deep hollow along forty km., however, is of fundamental importance from an anthropological point of view because here they were discovered - in 1959 by the Leakey - the remains of the first hominids, with all their stone artifacts.

  • The place itself is somewhat underwhelming because it's really a wide valley of land dug out in some places. Some of the features are quite cool to see, and on the whole, knowing the significance of the place with regards to history is what will add to visiting the place.
  • Must visit just to feel the origin of our ancestors. Not massively spectacular or beautiful, but historical and inspiring.
