Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street), New Taipei

#1 of 434 in Things to do in New Taipei
Flea Market · Scenic Walking Area
Stroll through mysterious Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street) lined with rows of red lanterns hanging in front of quaint Chinese teahouses and inns. The narrow cobblestone street has changed little since the gold rush era of the town. Its traditional architecture, hilly surroundings, and misty weather evoke the atmosphere of the Academy-awarded anime "Spirited Away," attracting flocks of Japanese tourists and Ghibli fans. Eat your way through numerous food stalls packed with yummy traditional treats. Keep off the stairs at dusk when lanterns start to light up, or you will be trapped in the crowd of tourists trying to capture this scenic moment with cameras. • While the views are beautiful and there are many interesting and cool things to see, in some area you can hardly move due to the insane masses of tourists. The A-Mei tea house pictured here, was the inspiration behind the bathhouse in Spirited Away. Down the streets there are a lot of unique little gift shops and street food hole in the walls, although some may be overpriced. This is a place I would definitely visit again, although maybe in the daytime on a week day to avoid the crowds
  • Fun place for a day visit. Drive up on scooter and stayed the night. Place mostly closes around 8pm. We stayed at a cool little hotel that has a bar is open later but outside of that not much. Food is good. The ice cream burrito is excellent. Amei tea house was also good and fun. And the scenery is awesome.
